Host a White Elephant Party :: Ornament Exchange

Wed, August 20, 2014

The holidays are one of my favorite times of the year. There are so many get-togethers and celebrations with gift-giving and merriment – what’s not to love?! One of the most anticipated traditions here at Coton Colors is our annual Christmas Party hosted by my mom. Although the guest list gets longer year after year, we always enjoy a spirited white elephant gift exchange {no matter how long the game gets}.

In years past, packages have concealed anything and everything from novelties and re-gifted items to playful reminders of inside jokes and memorable office moments. One year, our Product Specialist, Lisa got creative wrapping a statue of a white ceramic elephant. The gift roused quite a few laughs and quickly became the elephant in the room everyone wanted, easily earning the most steals! It also inspired our new white elephant ornament design and the ornament exchange party I plan to host this holiday!

  • Glitzy Holiday with a pinch of playful!

Color Palette

  • “Traditional Christmas with a Twist” – Citron and red with a hint of navy for an unexpected touch of depth

Traditional Christmas colors are forever festive, but sticking with plain ol’ red and green can seem pretty overdone and boring one holiday party after the next. To keep my guests on their toes, I like mixing all different shades of red and green to give these customary colors a fun update. The navy touches add a much needed refresh.

  • Coarse Glitter
  • Textured Glass
  • Frosted Glass
  • Lacquered Tree Bark

Mixed textures add depth and interest to any party décor. For this event, I plan to mix the smooth glass with the rougher feel of the glitter and tree bark for high-impact and just the right amount of sparkle.

Decor Enhancers

  • Lacquered Tree Branches
  • Copper Fairy Lights

Lacquered branches are easy to buy, but they’re also easy to make! Simply gather your branches, remove any bark, and spray on the color that fits your theme. I like to tie ornaments on the branches for a less-traditional approach to the classic evergreen. I love lighting, and copper fairy lights will create the right amount of ambiance. Small and unassuming, the glow is almost magical… Just like the holidays.

  • Vino in Glittered Wine Bottles

Really, both red and white feel right for the holiday season, but “white” just goes better with the theme. For extra shimmer, I’m planning to make my bottles glitter.

Just spray adhesive around the wine bottle; sprinkle chunky gold glitter over the whole bottle section by section and let it dry. It only takes a few minutes to finish each bottle, and gift giving goes better with a little spirit and a lot of glam!

  • Peppermint Bark

It’s a Christmas classic! The white chocolate makes this tasty confection a no-brainer for my party. Plus it’s easy, pretty and so very indulgent. One just needs to remember to enjoy responsibly!

  • “I Want a Hippopatamus for Christmas” – Gayla Peevey
  • Followed by a mix of retro and modern Christmas tunes

Really, enough said. Check out my holiday playlist. Each jingle is inspired by our ornament designs.

So get your White Elephant Ornaments, invite your friends, and let the exchange begin!
