Sara Kate on: Running the St. Jude Marathon

Thu, September 29, 2016

It’s crazy how quickly September has flown by! Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is coming to a close- we’ve loved being able to share with you how we are fighting to help end this terrible disease with our support of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. One of my favorite experiences that I’ve had with St. Jude is visiting the hospital for the first time and participating in the St. Jude Memphis Marathon (no not the full marathon, but I did run a race!). Each year we’ve been asked to participate in the Marathon Expo before the race and personalize our custom-designed ornaments for St. Jude and the Marathon participants. It really is incredible seeing and talking with thousands of people who are running to support the hospital. It hits you when we personalize a patient number or a cancer-free date for someone who was treated at St. Jude. It has been such an honor to commemorate their stories with our ornaments!

Last December, the entire Coton Colors crew made their way to Memphis, not just for the Expo, but to run the St. Jude Marathon! It was the first time the entire staff was able to go, and we all had the opportunity to fall in love with St. Jude, just as my mom fell in love with the cause years ago. As the resident photographer at the office, I was able to capture so many fun and special moments that we all experienced together. While many of us walked, we have a few members of our staff run the entire marathon! Our Web Manager, Samantha said,

“Running the St. Jude’s Marathon was one of the most challenging experiences I have ever had, both mentally and physically. It was also, by far, the most rewarding. Running through the St. Jude’s campus and seeing the children there cheering for all of us, knowing that I was able to make a difference in their lives, made every minute of the months and months of fundraising and training more than worth it. I can not wait to participate in this event again in the future.”

It was such a special event that we will always remember- and cannot wait to participate again. While I probably won’t participate in the full marathon – it’s a favorite event to capture! Check out our pictures from the trip!
