The Rum Runner :: Summer’s ‘Not a Care in the World’ Solution
Maybe it’s the unbelievably blue waters of the Atlantic, the Old Florida charm and character-filled locales, or the sea swept shores awash in salty air that beckons those seeking a piece of paradise to the Florida Keys. Whatever the draw, the Keys inspires laid-back living that invites cocktail hour any time of day and a party any time of night.
This summer, enjoy a drink from The Happy Everything Cookbook that celebrates the ‘don’t worry, be happy’ atmosphere of the Keys, our Not a Care in the World Rum Runners.
Named after the actual felonious “rum runners” that were among the first inhabitants of the Florida Keys, this cocktail was invented at the Holiday Isle Tiki Bar in the late 1950s. A new bartender discovered an overstock of Hirim Walker Blackberry Brandy, banana liqueur and light rum, so he packed this fruity cocktail with more than a little punch!
Not a Care in the World Rum Runners
- 1½ cups spiced rum
- 1½ cups orange juice
- ½ cup banana liqueur
- ½ cup blackberry brandy
- ¼ cup grenadine
- ¼ cup pineapple juice
- 8 fresh pineapple wedges, to garnish
In a pitcher, pour rum, orange juice, banana liqueur, blackberry brandy, grenadine, and pineapple juice; stir to combine. Fill eight 12-ounce glasses with ice, and garnish with a pineapple wedge. Pour punch over ice and serve.
Note: The best part is the pineapple wedge after it has soaked awhile in the punch. It’s hard to resist, but you will be glad if you save it for last!
Just remember…. Wild things tend to happen when one partakes of too many Rum Runners.
