Laura On: Everything Ruffled
If you have been following Coton Colors for some time now, you may see that ruffled edges have become a signature shape and staple to the Coton Colors Kitchen + Home Collection. It all started when my daughter Kyle was born. She was a tiny baby, very petite and graceful. I searched the marketplace trying to find the perfect bowl to serve rice cereal from, one that fit her personality (and mine for that matter). After searching and not finding what I was truly looking for, I decided to design one.
It started with a sketch, a small bowl with simple ruffled edges. It had to be the right shape to easily mix cereal. It had to fit in my hand perfectly to easily serve a hungry baby. Working with a local potter, who happened to be a new dad himself, my sketch was brought to life on his potter’s wheel. It took less than four attempts to make this first rice cereal bowl shape perfect and it became the very first prototype under my newly formed company, Coton Colors Pottery. I loved watching my sketch come to life from a lump of clay. And from that lump of clay, the perfect bowl for Kyle was born.
I was quickly drawn to those ruffles and soon began sketching multiple shapes that sported these edges. The shape is truly unique due to the handmade nature of the ruffles. It’s the potter’s hands that form each ruffle, creating a truly one-of-a-kind piece.
Over the years, I have experimented by adding ruffles to many new shapes, some small, some extremely large. However, the classic shapes have stayed the same and will continue to do so in the many years to come.
