Attached to a Cause

Get the Story
It was a moving visit to St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital in spring of 2012 that changed founding artist Laura Johnson’s heart forever. Having built her life and livelihood around artistic pursuits, Laura already knew how happy art made her, the people around her, and ultimately, even her customers. But after hosting an art workshop with the pediatric patients in St. Joseph’s art therapy program, she saw firsthand how artistic expression could inspire positive change and healing in the lives of children.

“I have had the distinct joy and humbling honor of teaching art workshops for pediatric patients, watching the eyes of precious children light up with the happiness of being out of their hospital rooms and creating artwork,” said Laura.

When it came time to choose a focus for Coton Colors second annual Attached to a Cause giving program, art therapy seemed the obvious choice. According to Laura, “We created our Attached to a Causse last year in an effort to share a little piece of our own happy with those who need it most. Once our team started reviewing potential charitable partners, I knew without doubt that Art with Heart was the perfect fit.”

This year, Attached to a Cause will once again be tied to our ever-popular Happy Everything collection. Laura designed the Art with Heart Gallery Attachment, a vibrant red clipboard with wooden clothespins for displaying treasured artistic creations. Available in Big and Mini sizes, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of each Art with Heart Attachment will benefit art therapy programs within pediatric hospital units across the United States.

In an effort to expand art therapy awareness, Coton Colors also custom-designed the “Color Me Happy” Coloring Book for kids of all ages to create artwork perfectly sized for display on the Gallery Attachment. For every coloring book sold, Coton Colors will donate a coloring book to the art therapy program at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and others across the nation.

Get Involved
Create your own Give Colorfully Day by delivering Art Kits to your local hospital, painting a mural or hosting a What Makes Your Happy workshop for your local Art Therapy program. Simply contact your local Art Therapy program to schedule a day and time, gather art supplies such as crayons, markers and paint and provide enough “Color Me Happy” Coloring Books for the number of children attending. Then watch the kids light up as they work through the pages of the coloring book and explore all of the things that make them happy through artistic expression. As a parting gift, you could donate an “Art with Heart” Gallery Attachment and Happy Everything Base of your choice to give the children a place to display their works of art for all to see!

A downloadable template of our “Color Me Happy” Mural is available here. Simply project onto any wall and trace the lines of page one. Then, have the kids paint using the colors shown on page two.
